Notes: adding fractions

Notes ยท 1/2

Same denominator

Add the numerators and keep the denominator: 2/7 + 3/7 = 5/7.

Different denominators

  1. Find the LCM of the denominators.
  2. Change each fraction to an equivalent fraction with that denominator.
  3. Add the numerators.

Example: 1/2 + 1/3. The LCM of 2 and 3 is 6, so 1/2 = 3/6 and 1/3 = 2/6. Therefore 1/2 + 1/3 = 5/6.
